Beşiktaş. You must have heard of the name of this area before you came to Turkey, or as soon as you arrived there. It is the number one area in Istanbul that has been very popular among Turks and foreigners as it has an exceptional location, and is considered one of the most important centres in Istanbul. Beşiktaş is located in the European portion of Istanbul west of the Bosphorus, bordered to the north by Sarıyer, to the west by Kağıthane and Şişli, to the south by Beyoğlu, and on the eastern side of the Bosphorus it is bordered by Üsküdar.
 
Beşiktaş is named by the Ottomans and it consists of two parts: beşik means cradle, and taş means stone, after the Byzantine church of Kounopetra which means in Greek (stone cradle). In another explanation, the name was formerly beştaş which means five stones, a reference to the stone pillars built by the sailor Hayreddin Barbarossa (the commander of Ottoman fleets who was  tarnished his reputation by film series: Pirates of the Caribbean, where they presented him as a greedy pirate).
